Microbe-Joy Workshop

The workshop is held at the Food Hub. Through a learning experience themed around fermented food, the workshop provides insights into the invisible connection between microorganisms and sustainable living. Topics include fermentation technology and science, food culture, food preservation, healthy living, resource recycling and regenerative farming. This will help students rediscover the close connection between personal habits and personal health, and the environment and society. Additionally, they will learn about traditional wisdom and the way of sustainable living, promoting the harmonious coexistence of the public and the environment.

Highlights of the Micro Joy workshop
- Fermented food tour – linking visible and invisible parts of nature, such as microbial activity.
- Experience making traditional fermented foods and learning the sustainable living principles from traditional living wisdom.
- Enjoy the local organic seasonal ingredients and learn about seasonal planting.
- Explore the role of microorganisms in resource recycling through food waste composting principles.
- Review the sustainability of the food system by analyzing food nutrition labels.
- Introduce low-carbon diet principles and cultivate awareness of food systems and life literacy.

About the Food Hub
The workshop will take place at the Kardoorie Farm and Botanic Garden’s Food Hub, which is located at the HKU Kadoorie Center in Shek Kong, and will open in Jan 2025. It aims to promote food literacy beneficial for both well-being and the environment through three main functions:
- Provide organic and low carbon vegetarian dining experience for visitors.
- Provide experiential learning courses on environmental education and food literacy.
- Support innovative interdisciplinary research to promote the ecological and cultural conservation of food and agriculture, as well as the sustainability of the food system.
